Mustangs Defeat Panthers in Four Set Match
Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs volleyball team managed to turn out another win against the Passaic County College Panthers Tuesday.
The Mustangs got off to a slow start in the first set of the evening, letting the Panther gain a significant seven point lead. The Mustangs were able to make a come back midway through the game but the momentum of the match turned back in the Panthers' favor. the Panthers pulled out a 25-23 win over the Mustangs to start the evening.
Head Coach Misti Volpe commented on the first set. "The girls made some key errors early on in the game, but did a good job of turning the momentum in their favor several times."
In the second match up, the Mustangs came out a bit stronger to lead by three points when a game-changing injury landed one of the Passaic starters on the bench. After the stoppage, the Mustangs were able to regain focus and win three in a row, 25-17, 25-10 and 25-16.
Volpe said of the performance, "Our team is very tough defensively. We do a good job of making almost ever defensive touch playable. Passaic is a very scrappy team, with one of the best defenses we have faced so far. Our girls had a tough time putting balls away in the first game of the night, but kept swinging and playing smart, which is what won us the match in the end."
Brianna Musselman led the offense with 14 kills, followed by Briana Rodriguez with 10 and Bethany Rendemonti with six. Defensively the team was led by libero Mel Angelucci with 17 digs, followed by Nikki Reichert with 14 and Sam Reeves with 12. Musselman and Reichert led the team in aces, with five apiece. Setter Kaitlynn Franks dished out her season high of 30 assists for the evening.
