Spartans Inch by Mustangs
Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women's volleyball team started out strong against visiting Northampton Community College Spartans Monday, but ultimately came up just short of a win.
Head Coach Misti Volpe was proud of her Mustangs squad, who downed the Spartans in the first set of the evening, winning 25-8. "After each point in that set, the girls came together and cheered to keep the momentum on our side of the court," said Volpe. "It was a great way to start the match."
The Mustangs then faultered slightly in the second match, letting the Spartans win the set 25-15. However, the Mustangs were not rattled and were able to steal the third set 25-13. The Spartans were down two sets to one but rallied to win the fourth set 17-25.
Pumped up by the back and forth action, the Mustangs came out with a renewed energy for the final set of the evening. The team jumped to an 11-5 lead but were unable to hold the Spartans off. The Spartans were able to tie up the game at 12-12 and ended the game with a 16-14 win to take the match 3-2.
Coach Volpe expressed pride in her team's efforts. "I'm proud of the effort the girls consistently put forth. It is still early in the season and I am confident we still have much untapped potential."
Brianna Musselman led the team offensively with 16 kills, a career match high, and hit a .321 average for the night. She also led the team in points per game. Setter Kaitlynn Franks had eight kills, 26 assists and a .368 average.
On defense, the Mustangs team was anchored by Nikki Reichert with 11 digs, Mel Angelucci with eight digs and Franks with seven digs.
Kaitlynn Franks said of the evening, "We played well defensively overall, but had a slow start getting into an offensive rhythm. Once we found it, Northampton could not shut us down. Everyone put in a great effort."
