Volleyball Sweeps Season Opener
Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs women's volleyball team swept the Owls of Union County College in the team's 2011 season opener.
The Mustangs stepped on the court rearing and ready to play as the team placed pressure on the Owls right from the start. In a three set sweep, the Mustangs devoured the competition, winning 25-15, 25-10 and 25-23.
Head Coach Misti Volpe applauded her team's performance. "The girls did a great job increasing pressure on the opposition and themselves throughout the competition by focusing on precision and minimizing errors."
Leading in kills for the Mustangs were Brianna Musselman with eight, Nikki Reichert with seven and Sam Reeves with five. Musselman also led the team in aces, along with teammate Mel Angelucci, with six aces each. Reichert followed closely behind with four. Defensively Angelucci performed well with 11 digs and 11 perfect passes. Kelsey Kowalick notched six digs and Reichert executed nine perfect passes. Newcomer Kaitlynn Franks also contributed with 21 assists for the night.
Overall the Mustangs played an outstanding defensive game, scoring .769 in dig efficiency and a .917 passing efficiency.
Second year sophomore Angelucci commented on the team's defense. "Together we worked as a team to make sure the ball never touched the floor. We were determined to be strong for our offense."
In an ongoing effort to promote hunger awareness, the volleyball team collected canned goods from fans at the game. The goods collection will continue throughout the season.
