Women's Volleyball Bests Trailblazers
Nanticoke, Pa. The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs womens volleyball team beat the Luzerne County Community College Trailblazers in four sets to improve their record to 7-2.
The match started off a little slower than the Mustangs had anticipated, losing 19-25 in the first set. But the team managed to steady their game and come back to win three sets in a row, and ultimately the match.
In the first game, hitting errors on the outside played a key role in the loss. Trailing the Luzerne team, Mandy Slook and Jalene Kicinski came in off the bench and were able to turn the momentum in favor of the Mustangs. While the effort was too late to save the first game, the move set the stage for the Mustangs to advance.
The next three games went as the Mustangs were hoping, as they beat the Trailblazers 25-17, 25-11 and 25-17. Slook said of the turnaround, After our loss we all pulled together as a team for the win and to show Luzerne what we were made of.
Brianna Musselman and Emily Mayer finished with career game highs of 15 and 11 kills respectively. Steph Angelucci led the team with 20 assists, followed by Corey Trego with 15. Angelucci also led the team with 10 serving aces, almost half of her teams total of 22 for the evening.
Angelucci was joined by sister Mel Angelucci and teammate Samantha Reeves in a near flawless serve reception performance, notching just two errors in 32 attempts.
Head Coach Misti Volpe noted her teams mental performance. I am extremely proud of the girls for the way they turned the match around mentally and began playing with their momentum. It shows their strength of mind and character. I expect this to permeate and set the standard for the rest of our season when it comes to turning matches in our favor.
Next the Mustangs will compete in a tri-match against the Lehigh Carbon Community College Cougars and the Community College of Philadelphia Colonials on Saturday, Oct. 2.
