Reigning Champ Hawks Edge Past Women's Volleyball

Harrisburg, Pa. - On Wednesday, Sept. 15th the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs took on the Harrisburg Area Community College Hawks.

The Mustangs, new kids on the block, gave the reigning 2009 EPCC champions a run for their money but were unable to overtake the Hawks. Losing three sets in a row, the Mustangs swallowed a hard 0-3 loss, but showed promise, losing each matchup within two points of the volleyball powerhouse Hawks.

Sets one and three were 23-25 losses and set two was a back and forth battle resulting in a 28-26 victory for the Hawks. The Mustangs took the lead within the last five points of set two, but Harrisburg would not roll over and fought back to close out the set with a scrappy win.

Corey Trego led the Mustangs with seven assists, followed closely by Steph Angelucci with six assists and seven aces. Sharnae Johnson led the team in kills with seven while Brianna Musselman racked up five. Mel Angelucci led on defense with 14 digs.

Head Coach Misti Volpe is still settling down her new squad. "This was our first time playing with a new lineup and I was pleased with the results. Good passes resulted in quick sets to our middles, who connected well and really put the balls away."

Volpe and her team are eager to learn from the loss and continue to tweak and improve their team. "We did well keeping our energy up and picking each other up when we made mistakes," said sophomore Steph Angelucci. "The loss will definitely make us work ten times harder to make sure we don't lose again."

The Mustangs had a number of fans travel out to Harrisburg to support the team Wednesday, support for which Volpe and her squad were very thankful.

Next the Mustangs will host a trimatch on Saturday, Sept. 18 against Delaware County Community College and Luzerne County Community College. The trimatch starts at 12:00 p.m.
