Lincroft, N.J. In their first season in Region XIX of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), the Montgomery County Community College women's basketball team landed a fourth place finish in post season competition.
The Mustangs were seeded in the number five spot going into post-season play. In the quarterfinal round, they upset the 4 seeded Middlesex County College Colts with a 69-64 victory. The Mustangs then moved on to face the 1 seeded Ocean County College Vikings in the semifinal round. After a nail-biting performance, the Mustangs ultimately fell to the Vikings 50-56.
The Vikings posted to the scoreboard first but the Mustangs kept the pressure on, building an early 11-6 lead. The Vikings regrouped in a timeout and were able to force three turnovers in a row, allowing the squad to pull ahead 15-13 by the half way point of the first half.
The Vikings continued to build their lead with a barrage of shots and three successful, unanswered 3-pointers in a row. Down 17-33 by the 5:00 mark, Mustangs freshmen Amelia Stockman and Alyssa Butcher lead a scoring charge to bring the team back within six, to trail the Vikings only 31-37 at half time.
In the second half the Mustangs found momentum early on and began to close in on the Vikings' advantage. The Vikings made a number of successful drives, but the Mustangs kept their opponent in sight, staying within two points of the opponent for over eight minutes.
The Vikings got into foul trouble with just over 6:00 to go in play and the Mustangs were able to tie it up 46-46 off foul shots. The Mustangs pressed on trying to capture the lead, but could not overtake the Vikings. The ball bounced back and forth on the court, with each team missing one key shot after the other.
