Mustangs Top Division II Oaks
Blue Bell, Pa. The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs hosted the Salem Community College Oaks in the team's first home game of 2012 on Tuesday Jan. 10.
After an opening 8-4 lead, the Oaks fell behind the Mustangs 9-8 and had difficulties regaining momentum. The Mustangs held the Oaks scoreless for over five minutes racking up a 17-8 lead half way through the first half.
The Oaks adapted to the Mustangs' style, coming back within two at a score of 21-19 with 6:30 left before the half. But the Mustangs stepped up the pressure, scoring 12 unanswered points before the buzzer, to send the Oaks into the locker room at a 19-33 deficit.
To start the second half the Mustangs knocked in a layup first but the Oaks started to close the lead once again. Within six minutes the Oaks trailed by just one point at 40-41. Mustangs freshman Alyssa Butcher stepped up for a couple of breakaway layups to secure a 48-40 Mustangs lead. The Oaks kept the intensity up, shrinking that lead to one point once again with just 30 seconds left on the clock.
Ahead 56-55, the Mustangs put in another basket to lead 58-55. The Oaks called a timeout with 15.8 left on the clock to strategize a three-point play, but the team could not deliver and the Mustangs were able to walk away with a 58-55 win over the Division II opponent.
Leading the Mustangs in points was Alyssa Butcher with 20, followed by Dayna McCrewell with 14 and Brianna Musselman with 10.
