Mustangs Advance to EPCC Final

Schneckville, Pa. In their first season of intercollegiate play the Montgomery County Community College womens basketball team earned a spot in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) Championship game by defeating the Community College of Philadelphia Colonials 91-73 in Saturdays semifinal match up.

From the very beginning of the game the Mustangs looked like winners. Taking control of the ball and scoring first, the Mustangs jumped out to a significant lead. The Colonials put forth effort to rally the troops but were unable to recover the Mustangs strong start.

Going into the second half down by 8 at 33-41, the Colonials pulled out all the stops, giving the Mustangs their most physical competition of the season. But the Mustangs held firm and were able to withstand each of their opponents runs.

By late in the second half, the Mustangs had thoroughly frustrated the Colonials defense, which allowed the Mustangs to rally up a 22 point lead. With 2:30 minutes left on the clock both teams were aware of the impeding outcome of the game, further tearing down the Colonials drive and boosting the Mustangs morale.

The Mustangs cruised to a final score of 91-73, topping the Community College of Philadelphia Colonials by 19 points and clinching their place in Sundays EPCC Championship game against the Cougars of Lehigh Carbon Community College.

The high scorer for the Mustangs, contributing 42 points in the game, was Mercedes Harris (Norristown), who has lead the Mustangs all season in scoring and rebounds. Janay Winston (Phoenixville) followed Harris with a season high of 25 points. Key defenders Ayana Allen (Abington), Jennifer Kopsie (Plymouth Whitemarsh), and Carla Sirak (Ewing) also contributed to the Mustangs victory.

The top-seeded Lehigh Carbon Community College will host the EPCC Championship game on their home court in Schnecksville, Pa. at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday February 13, 2010. The Cougars defeated the Mustangs by 15 and 21 points respectively in their regular season match ups. The underdog Mustangs are looking for an upset Sunday.
