Winston, Caracappa Earn All-Region Recognition
Blue Bell, Pa. – Two athletes from Montgomery County Community College earned All-Region Second Team recognition in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for the Spring 2010 season.
Janay Winston, a freshman from Phoenixville, Pa., was named to the NJCAA Softball Region XIX Division III All-Region Second Team. Winston continues to be a great asset to the softball program, according to Head Coach William Plichta. This season she was named Mustangs Athlete of the Week twice, once for going 7-for-7 with 10 RBIs, six runs, two walks, and four stolen bases and again for knocking out 12 hits, 10 RBIs, and nine runs at 18 at-bats. Winston’s overall 2010 statistics boasted a .482 batting average, as she earned 42 hits, 40 RBIs, 33 runs, 17 walks, four doubles, three triples, and two home runs at 87 at-bats.
Representing the Mustangs baseball team, sophomore Mike Caracappa (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned a spot on the NJCAA Baseball Region XIX Division III All-Region Second Team. As a short stop and second baseman, Caracappa was a key player on the Mustangs defense and, as a switch hitter, he contributed valuable plays on offense as well. This season Caracappa had 143 at-bat opportunities, earning a batting average of .392 with 51 hits, 21 RBIs, 41 runs, eight triples, ten doubles, and one home run.
Both the softball and baseball teams competed in their first seasons of intercollegiate play in the NJCAA this year. Athletes like Winston and Caracappa contributed to the teams’ successes and are examples of excellence for the Mustangs’ future squads.
