Mustangs Bounce Back, Take down the Bulldogs 73-63
By: Oliver Griffin
Montco Men's Basketball bounced back from Thursday's heartbreaker in a massive win over Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Not only did Montco secure a fifth win in this matchup, but they gained some momentum for a big matchup against Northampton Community College on Tuesday, November 22.
Thaddeus Stevens, credit to them, came out with energy on both ends of the floor, but the Mustangs were a force to be reckoned with early on. In each game they've played, it's been clear that Montco's number one priority on the offensive end is to generate good shots, and not to force anything. Every team Montco has faced has attempted over 20 3-point-shots against the Mustangs, while the Mustangs often keep their 3-point volume to around 10-attempts per game. In turn, Montco's execution revolves around shots that are close to the basket – efficient shots that can often lead to foul shots, as well. However, getting to the basket is not an easy task on every possession, yet it seems that Montco's dribble-drive playstyle is extremely reliable for this group, as the Mustangs rarely take a "bad" shot, or force a shot at the end of the shot-clock. This was true for Saturday's contest vs. Thaddeus Stevens, in which Montco had good ball movement across the game, driving the ball to the basket relentlessly, always making sure that they have players in the paint to fight for the offensive rebound. Montco led almost the entire game, and defeated Thaddeus Stevens handily in a 73-63 victory.
The Mustangs were led by veteran Will Anderson, who connected on 9-for-16 of his shot-attempts, dropping 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Naim Walker was dropping dimes from the start of this one, and had a very impactful presence on the offense, finishing with 8 points and 9 assists – including a play in which he broke an incoming double-team from Thaddeus Stevens, drove in the lane and found an open Matt Compas, lobbing him the ball for a signature throw-down by Compas. Compas, who only played 14 minutes in this one, had an immediate impact in the second-half opening up the lead with his efficient 13 points off the bench. Christian Renninger also gave the Mustangs a spark off the bench, with 8 points (2-3 from 3), 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
The Mustangs will look to move to 6-1 in a Tuesday night match-up against Northampton Community College (4-1). Tip-off is at 7 p.m., directly after the Montco Women's Basketball team also faces the Northampton Spartans at 5 p.m.
