Bulldogs Inch Past Mustangs 69-71

Blue Bell, Pa. - The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs lost to conference opponents the Thaddeus Stevens Institute of Technology Bulldogs 69-71 on Saturday, Dec. 4.

In a very physical, back-and-forth contest, the Mustangs and Bulldogs entered the double-bonus tied at 16-16 just nine minutes into the first half. Each team displayed an aggressive defense, racking up a combined 33 fouls but allowing only 60 total points before half time.

The Mustangs held a 34-26 advantage over the Bulldogs going into the second half and opened up the scoring to create a double digit disparity in the score for the first time in the competition. However, the Bulldogs began to make a comeback, taking the lead at 14:12 with a score of 41-40.

The game was close for the remainder of the second half, with the Bulldogs holding a two to four point advantage until the very end. The Mustangs were able to hang on with a stunning second half performance by Nick Roman, who scored 18 of the Mustangs' 35 second-half points. In the last four minutes Roman racked up eight points with a 3-point shot and five made free throws. Roman also led the Mustangs in scoring with 21 points total, the only player to earn double figures.

Head Coach Denny Surovec commented on the loss. "Our guys played with great effort tonight. We had a solid first half, but we lacked execution in the second. Stevens did a good job of taking advantage of our miscues and outperformed us in the second half."

The Mustangs are now 9-2 overall, 6-1 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference. Next they will host conference play against the Colonials of the Community College of Philadelphia on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010.
