Mustangs Inch by Jersey Blues

Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's baseball team beat the Brookdale Community College Jersey Blues 14-12 on Monday, Apr. 5, 2010.

The game was a close match up through the third inning, at which point the Jersey Blues held a 1-0 lead over the Mustangs. However, in the fourth and fifth innings, the Brookdale team began to pull away, leading 10-5 after five full innings. But the Mustangs answered the Jersey Blues, making a comeback in the sixth to tie up the game at 10-10.

The Mustangs threatened to take the lead, but the Jersey Blues were able to pop out two runs in the seventh inning. Not to be outdone, the Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game with a two-run home run by Kristian Von Kiel (Emmaus). With the game tied up at 12 apiece, Jim Heilman (AB Wood) hit a double to right field, followed by a single to left field by Jacob Lehotta (Souderton), which advanced Heilman to home plate off a misplayed ball. Lehotta then came home on a wild pitch, putting the Mustangs ahead of the Jersey Blues 14-12.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Jersey Blues replied to the Mustangs' rally by scoring seven runs. However, the game was called due to darkness before the Mustangs could bat and the final score of the game was reverted to the eighth inning score.

The Mustangs' winning pitcher was reliever Patrick Quinn (Swenson AT), who pitched four innings, issuing six hits, two walks, and three earned runs. Starting pitcher Tyler Guentter (North Penn) pitched four innings and issued eight hits, four walks, eight earned runs and four strikeouts.

Offensively for the Mustangs, Von Kiel went 3-for-5 with one run, a double, a home run, and three RBIs; Lehotta went 2-for-4 with three runs; Ron Levan (Pottstown) went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs; Will Sinnott (Phoenixville) went 2-for-4 with two runs, a home run, and one RBI; Tom Brucker (Upper Dublin) went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, and two RBIs; and John Alexander (Cheltenham) went 2-for-5 with one run, a double, and one RBI.
