Mustangs Top Mountain Hawks JV
Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs men's baseball team overtook the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks JV team 8-7 on Sunday, Mar. 28, 2010.
It was a close game between the Mustangs and the Mountain Hawks and the Mustangs starting pitcher, Jim Heilman (AB Wood), struggled on the mound. After three innings, Heilman switched positions with shortstop Ed Skilton (Kennedy-Kendrick), who pitched three more innings before getting into trouble in the top of the seventh. Mustangs Coach Lou Lombardo returned the players to their initial positions with bases loaded and two outs for the Mountain Hawks. Heilman was able to finish off their clean up hitter and the Mustangs entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 6-7.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs were able to salvage the game. Eric Smith (Plymouth Whitemarsh) led off with a single to center field. Patrick Quinn (Swenson AT) replaced Smith as a pinch runner and was able to advance to second base on an errant pick-off attempt by the Lehigh pitcher. Quinn subsequently scored off a single to right center by Will Sinnott (Phoenixville). Tied up at seven apiece, the Mountain Hawks then botched a ground ball to third base by Ron Levan (Pottstown), which allowed Sinnott to come in for the game winning point.
Winning pitcher Heilman allowed nine hits and one walk and tallied three strikeouts and six earned runs. On offense Mike Caracappa (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned two runs and one stolen base, Sinnott went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Kristian Von Kiel (Emmaus) went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Heilman went 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Skilton went 1-for-3 with two runs.
The Mustangs baseball team is now 7-9 overall (2-2 NJCAA Region XIX Division III). The team will host Brookdale Community College on Tuesday, Mar. 30. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
