Cougars Defeat Mustangs in Fifth Inning Rally
Blue Bell, Pa. – The Montgomery County Community College Mustangs baseball team was defeated 2-4 by the Lehigh Carbon Community College Cougars Wednesday, Mar. 24, 2010.
The game started out well for the Mustangs, who scored first in the bottom of the second inning with a triple to left center by Jacob Lehotta (Souderton), followed by a balk by Cougars starting pitcher Andrew Kulp, which sent Lehotta home. The Mustangs advanced to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Chris Connor's (Methacton) base hit brought in Ron Levan (Pottstown) from second base.
Defensively, the Mustangs were able to keep the Cougars off the board until the top of the fifth inning, at which point the Cougars brought in three runs on a two-out rally. From that point on the Mustangs were unable to produce any momentum at bat, remaining scoreless for the rest of the game. The Cougars added another run to their lead in the top of the sixth, bringing them a 4-2 win over the Mustangs.
Mustangs pitchers Tyler Guentter (North Penn) and Jim Heilman (AB Wood) performed well overall. Guentter allowed two hits and an intentional walk and earned one strikeout in just over one inning on the mound. Heilman threw just 49 pitches over the first four innings allowing six hits, two walks, and four runs and issuing five strikouts.
The Mustangs' record is now 4-8 overall (1-1 in the NJCAA DIII Region XIX). Next the Mustangs will travel to Delaware County Community College for a 4:00 p.m. game on Thursday, Mar. 25, 2010.
