Volleyball Wins on the Road against Lehigh Carbon

After beating Brookdale on Wednesday, volleyball traveled to Lehigh Carbon Community College on Thursday. Lehigh brought an impressive 4-2 record into the match, and Montgomery brought their almost equally as impressive 3-2 record. The match would prove that these two teams were just as equally matched as their records suggested.

In the first set, the Mustangs started off strong. It was easy to see that the momentum from Wednesday's Brookdale match had carried into the Lehigh match. Montgomery built up an early lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-16.

From there, things got interesting. Five errors early in the set saw Montgomery face a tough deficit to overcome. As strong as the Mustangs were in the first set, the Cougars were just as strong in the second, winning 25-16, a reversed score of the first set.

The Mustangs now knew that this match was going to be a fight. So, in the third set, they came out swinging. Rebecca Godshall's (FR, Souderton) five kills in the set lead the offense for the Mustangs. However, Lehigh didn't slow down either. They continued to attack the ball as well and, if it weren't for 28 combined digs in the set for the Mustangs, they might have pulled ahead. The third set ended in a close 25-21 win for Montgomery.

As close as the third set was, the fourth set was even closer. When one team managed to pull ahead, the other would swing the momentum. Thanks in part to Grace Terrizzi's (FR, Abington) two blocks (the most by any Mustang in any set) the score managed to be tied at 24-24.

Volleyball operates on a "win-by-two" system, so Montgomery knew that in order to win, they'd have to win two points in a row. They did exactly that, performing in crunch time and grabbing the 26-24 win.

This gave the Mustangs a 3-1 win and improved their record to 4-2 overall. Next, volleyball will travel to Northampton to take on the Spartans on Tuesday.
