Recap: Women Earn Tri-Match Split

TOMS RIVER, NJ - It was an up-and-down Saturday afternoon for Montgomery volleyball as the team swept past Raritan Valley Community College after being knocked off in straight sets by Ocean County College at an EPAC tri-match hosted by the Vikings.

In match one Ocean downed the Mustangs 25-14, 25-12, 25-17 as errors doomed the Mustangs throughout. All told, the team committed 23 hitting errors, 7 service errors and 7 receiving errors.

"Unfortunately the girls did not have their strongest game. Bottom line: too many unforced errors," said Head Coach Rita Rivera. "We are hoping to have redemption against them in the playoffs."

The Vikings, who were the runner-up in the Region XIX Tournament during their inaugural season last fall, have just one loss in Region XIX play this season.

The stat line for the match versus Ocean included Courtney Gill and Anna Morgan, who led the team with 7 kills apiece. Gill also led the team with 12 digs. Victoria Biggins led the team with 16 assists.

In match two, the Mustangs topped Raritan Valley, 25-7, 25-8, 25-4 behind 11 service aces and another 16 assists from Biggins. Katelyn Geiger led the team with 7 kills out of 7 hitting attempts, resulting in a 1.0% hitting percentage.

"We came out ready to play and kept the momentum throughout the entire match," Rivera said. "I was proud of how the girls bounced back following the mistake-filled outing against Ocean."

With one regular-season match left, Montgomery is 11-6 overall and 9-3 in Region XIX.

The Mustangs host Harrisburg Area Community College on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6 pm.
