Science by day. Sports by night. That pretty much sums up life these days for Mustangs' first-year volleyball coach Rita Rivera.
Officially named to the post on Aug. 18, 2014. She joins Montgomery County Community College after serving as an assistant coach with Rosemont College's Women's Volleyball team in 2013.
Rivera played Club Volleyball for approximately six years in addition to playing volleyball in middle school and high school. She attended Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School, where she played both softball and volleyball. She was named captain of the Varsity volleyball team and was voted 1st Team All-League.
A resident of Plymouth Meeting, PA, Rivera continued her volleyball career at Washington College, where she was a Libero/DS (defensive specialist) for four years. She accumulated 684 career digs at Washington College despite missing over half a season in 2012 due to a partially-torn Achilles, and she averaged 3.46 digs per set. Rivera also was among the top 5 in the Centennial Conference for number of aces served, and had the 2nd highest ace percentage at Washington College.
She was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, where she served as the Publicity Chair for two years. In addition to this membership, she was a captain of Relay for Life for four years, where she participated in "Locks of Love" and many other fundraisers.
Rivera graduated from Washington College in May of 2013 with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry. She currently works as a quality control/lab analyst at URL Pharma (Sun Pharma).
