Game Recap: Christensen Scores 2 Goals As Mustangs Fall In OT, 3-2

BLUE BELL, Pa. - Marisa Christensen scored 2 goals for the Mustangs in a valiant, yet heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to Northampton on home turf in Region XIX soccer action on Tuesday afternoon

A see-saw affair saw both the Mustangs and Spartans -- two teams playing with mostly first-year players -- controlling play at times in the each other's zone.

At the 19 minute mark of the first half, Taylor Nicholson won a one-on-one battled and made a nice pass to Christensen, who fired the ball high over Spartans' goalkeeper Alexa Korinchak for the game's first goal -- and the first goal of the season for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs nearly added to their lead several times, but it was the Spartans who struck next with Natalie Tuffy shooting one past Mustangs' goalkeeper Heather Spotts at the 44:27 mark of the first half.

The game remained deadlocked until the 56th minute when Christensen lofted a beautifully-struck corner kick from the left side which found its way into the net.

Shortly thereafter, the Spartans turned up the pressure and really controlled play. In the 73rd minute, Northampton's Brittany Frantz evened the game at 2-2.

The Spartans had two chances to take the lead in the final 10 minutes. One shot hit off the post in the 81st minute and then Spotts made a great save on a point-blank shot from
Frantz in the 87th minute.

Northampton took advantage of a tired Mustangs team in overtime and notched the game-winner five minutes into the first overtime thanks to Tuffy, who scored her second of the game.

The loss dropped the Mustangs to 0-4 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 2-5. Northampton's Jessica Velez received a yellow card in the match for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Mustangs Women's Soccer team is back in action Wednesday with a home match at 3:30 PM against Camden County College.
