Men's soccer received the tenth seed in the NJCAA Region XIX playoffs and were slated to play Ocean County College on Saturday. Both men's soccer and volleyball traveled to play away games for their playoff matches on Saturday, but both teams were still motivated to win.
The Mustangs had been plagued with injuries throughout the season, but the team seemed to finally be close to full strength. Ayoub Mouhou (SO, Daniel Boone), who was named to the All-Region first team, was playing in his second game after returning from his injury.
The Vikings immediately put the pressure on Montgomery, scoring within the first ten minutes. Down 1-0, the Mustangs shifted into a more defensive playstyle to combat the strong attack from Ocean. While this did stop the Viking attack, it also hurt Montgomery's offense, leading to neither team being able to score the rest of the first half.
The Mustangs knew they needed to score in the second half, so they decided to pick up their pace offensively and focus more on attacking. However, this left a few holes in their defense and allowed the Vikings to add two more goals. Despite a late penalty kick goal by Mouhou in the 82nd minute, the Mustangs fell to the Vikings 3-1.
Men's soccer finishes with an 8-6 overall record and a 5-2 record in conference. Even though they might not have reached their goals of winning the region and winning the conference, they still had a successful season. We'll look forward to what the team will bring next season!
