Recap: Night To Forget As Men Are Routed By DelCo

BLUE BELL, Pa. - The men's team from Delaware County Community College dealt Montgomery its worst loss of the season -- a forgettable 126-86 drubbing -- in a Region XIX contest Tuesday evening.

Six players scored in double figures as the Phantoms converted nearly 60 percent of its field goals (52 of 88) and all but seven of its free throws (14 of 21) in beating the Mustangs for a second time this season.

Shaakir Gibbs scored a career-high 37 points and Brendan Watton tied a season high with 10 rebounds for a Mustangs team that suffered its ninth EPAC loss this season.

Gibbs and Watton provided some early energy for Montgomery, each draining three-pointers to give the Mustangs an early 9-2 lead. Following a timeout, DelCo went on runs of 14-3 and 19-9 and essentially forced the Mustangs into catch-up mode for the remainder of the game. The Mustangs trailed by 17 at the half and the deficit only grew larger over the final 20 minutes.

"We took too many forced shots that led to run-outs," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Denny Surovec. "You can't give a good team like DelCo that many easy scoring opportunities and stay in the game for long."

Montgomery connected on 33 of its 80 shots. Those numbers include 13 connections on 39 attempts from beyond the arc. The Mustangs were 7 of 12 from the foul line. DelCo controlled the boards, out-rebounding the home team by a 53-36 margin.

Kevin Woods scored 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists for the Mustangs, while Ryan Brennan chipped in 14. Gibbs finished with five rebounds. Anthony Patterson remained sidelined due to injury.

Maalik Rochester, Khayyir Laws and Sean Havink all topped the 20-point plateau for the Phantoms, scoring 26, 24 and 21 points respectively.

Montgomery has little time to lick its wounds as it hosts Bucks County Community College in a 7 pm tip-off Thursday.
