In the past four games, the baseball team had faced off against one NJCAA Division III nationally ranked team, one NCAA Division III JV team and four total teams with winning records. The difficult stretch of their schedule was just beginnig however, because now they would have to face off against NJCAA Division II Lehigh Carbon Community College.
The Cougars jumped out to a huge 8-2 lead in the fifrth inning. The Mustangs were struggling to get anything going. Thats when Frankie Ramirez (FR, Winter Springs) hit his first homerun of the season over the left field fence. Ramirez's homerun in the fifth inning lifted the Mustangs and completely changed the momentum of the game. In the fifth inning alone, the Mustangs brought in seven runs and took a 9-8 lead.
Lehigh Carbon had to make a stand and they did, scoring four runs off the back of several Mustang errors. But the Mustangs weren't done either, adding four of their own in the seventh and eighth. In the top of the ninth, another Mustang error allowed Lehigh Carbon to get the go ahead run in scoring position. The Cougars capitalized and took a 14-13 lead.
Montgomery attempted to grab a run in the bottom of the ninth and a fielder's choice allowed them to get a runner on third. However, a fly ball led to the final out and the Mustangs were unable to bring that last run in. The final score of the Mustangs' most exciting game of the season so far ended in a 14-13 loss.
Montgomery had 9 errors, a season high, which lead to several runs for the Cougars. Luke Deleo (SO, Pope John Paul) had 3 runs and 2 RBIs on 3 hits in the loss.
The Mustangs' schedule only gets tougher, as they take on nationally ranked Rowan College at Gloucester County on Thursday.
