Baseball had found momentum in Myrtle Beach, SC during their trip to the Ripken Experience. However, they faced their toughest challenge yet on Wednesday against NJCAA DII SUNY Sullivan.
The Generals made it apparent that they meant business right away when their first batter hit a homerun. But the Mustangs stayed mentally strong and bounced right back, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.
Sullivan again put the pressure on the Mustangs, scoring another run in the top of the second to tie the game. Again, the Mustangs faced the diversity head on and scored two more of their own.
However, eventually the Generals' depth forced the Mustangs into a tough situation. They would score four runs in the third and fourth innings to take the lead. After they added one more run in the top of the seventh, it was do or die for the Mustangs, who needed at least 3 runs to continue the game.
Things were looking great early on, as Colt Narciso (FR, Pope John Paul) scored on a wild pitch, the same pitch that sent Matt Ahmad (SO, Pope John Paul) to third base. However, the Generals calmed themselves down and delivered three straight outs to end the game with a final score of 7-5.
Narciso finished the game with 2 runs and 1 RBI off of 2 hits. Mike Kelly (FR, Pope John Paul) continued his hot streak with 2 H, 1 R and 2 SB.
The Mustangs will finish up their trip with a rematch against Finger Lakes Community College on Thursday.
