BLUE BELL, Pa. - Montgomery's baseball team improved to 4-0 in Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) play with a 4-0 rain-shortened win over the Spartans of Northampton Community College on Tuesday afternoon.
The game featured a pair of hard-throwing righthanders in the Spartans' Eddy Albertson and the Mustangs' Chuck Delagol, the latter of whom struck out 11 in earning the win.
Both pitchers held their opponent scoreless through three innings. However, the 6-4 220-pound Albertson ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth.
Mark Ferrier started off the frame with a bloop single to left. Vince Catagnus followed with a single of his own. After Matt Kellar grounded into a fielder's choice, Paul Meagher laced an RBI single to left-center to plate Ferrier with the game's first run. Kevin Neumann followed by drawing a four-pitch walk before Albertson uncorked a wild pitch that scored Kellar for a 2-0 lead.
But the Mustangs were not done as they remained patient at the plate and fought through each at-bat. Designated hitter Donovan Squartino plated a run with a ground out to shortstop and Joe O'Brien closed out the scoring with an RBI single down the right-field line.
The 6-1 200-pound Delagol shut out the Spartans in the top half of the fifth before the rain began to fall in the home half of the fifth. The teams began the top half of the sixth, but a soaking rain prompted officials to suspend the game. The game was eventually called due to rain.
Montgomery, now 10-5 overall, will host the Trailblazers of Luzerne County Community College on Thursday in an EPAC matchup at 3:30 pm.
